SAMPOL ejecutará la nueva infraestructura eléctrica del Puerto de Bilbao
May 20, 2025

SAMPOL has been awarded the 2nd phase of the works for the new electrical infrastructure of the Port of Bilbao for the connection of ships to the grid.

The adopted installation will be carried out to provide the Port of Bilbao with a “Cold Ironing” solution, also called “OPS: Onshore Power Supply”.

During the works, the power lines will be repowered so that the facilities can provide 30 MW. To this end, three distribution centers, eleven transformation centers and eleven OPS connection points will be installed at piers A1, A2, A6, AZ3, Getxo 2 and Getxo 3.

There will be 20 outlets to provide independent service to the docking point of the ships at the pier. Likewise, to increase the power of the cruise ship docking area, located in the urban area of the municipality of Getxo and very distant from an electrical substation, a 1.34 kilometer submarine cable will be extended from Santurzi.

The infrastructure will have to be able to provide the vessels, at any connection point, with the design power at both 50Hz and 60Hz.

The project will be carried out by the joint venture formed by SAMPOL, Comsa Instalaciones y Sistemas Industriales and Montajes Eléctricos San Ignacio.

The execution period for the second phase is 24 months, once the construction project has been drafted and approved, so it will be completed in 2027.
