POL (Passive Optical LAN). The connectivity of the future, today
New paradigms in connectivity
The evolution of work environments requires a fast, flexible and efficient network that ensures seamless access to collaborative IT applications and services, allowing information sharing in a hybrid workspace.
Traditional LAN networks based on copper (structured cabling) and conventional switching have become obsolete, making any investment in them inefficient.
Wireless connectivity in the workplace is now an integral part of our mobility-driven lifestyle – without it, operations and sustainability are impossible.
Data must be transported over a unified network with a simplified, flexible and modular architecture that provides high bandwidth and low latency.
POL+WiFi6/7 offers maximum flexibility in IT service provision
POL (Passive Optical LAN) combined with WiFi6/7 is transforming transmission methods, network architecture and O&M, enabling the creation of smart networks with ultra-high bandwidth and energy efficiency.
This design enhances both user experience and connectivity efficiency:
A unified POL+IP solution managed from a single platform, streamlining network deployment.
Eliminates copper and racks, reducing implementation costs and optimising space requirements for deployment.
A highly scalable solution that adapts with complete flexibility and modularity to changing needs.
Reduces workload and significantly improves O&M efficiency.
POL (Passive Optical LAN) is the optimal architecture for deploying current and future LAN & WLAN services. It ensures maximum flexibility and eliminates obsolescence from traditional networks based on switching and structured cabling.
Innovation and Leadership
At SAMPOL, we have been global pioneers in implementing pure passive optical networks as the foundation for LAN layers in enterprise environments. With over a hundred projects completed in the hospitality sector, our track record includes initial proposals in 2014, proof-of-concept testing and first deployments in 2015, systematic room deployments from 2016 and fully integrated POL optical networks covering both rooms and common areas since 2018. By 2020, POL network deployment had expanded into corporate buildings and industrial facilities.
From conventional structured cabling (UTP, etc.) and switch-based designs to copper-free, rack-free passive optical networks, POL has become the de facto standard in much of the hospitality sector. Its adoption across all business environments – be it corporate buildings, industrial facilities and more – is now unstoppable.
Even the ETSII recognises this approach through the F5G (Fifth Generation Fixed Network) standard as the present and future of LAN/MAN environments.
For us, whether in new developments or telecommunications upgrades, POL is the foundation of any enterprise LAN design.
POL: the infrastructure for hotel market digitalisation
All current and future hotel services must be digital. In digitalisation, data is key – but data cannot exist without infrastructure and networks.
Digital infrastructure paradigms:
FROM ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL
From analogue to digital
We are witnessing an explosion of digital services. In addition to traditional services such as Internet, TV, telephone and CCTV, new elements like IoT, BMS, home automation and user experience solutions are now essential.
WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY
Wireless connectivity
Connectivity is – and will increasingly be – wireless. Wireless = Wi-Fi. We need high-quality, universally available Wi-Fi to support digital services.
COPPER IS DEAD
Copper is dead
New infrastructures rely exclusively on fibre optics.
Many existing infrastructures are obsolete and, in many cases, analogue. This situation presents an opportunity, allowing us to leap directly to state-of-the-art solutions while bypassing costly intermediate steps – enter POL (Passive Optical LAN):
MORE SUSTAINABLE AND SCALABLE
More sustainable and scalable
A pure fibre optic passive network. Eliminates copper, frees up space (racks and communication rooms) and minimises cabling and associated pathways.
FOCUSED ON CYBERSECURITY AND MOBILITY
Focused on cybersecurity and mobility
We protect your business’ telecommunications and IT networks.
IN THE ISP MARKET
In the ISP market
A mature technology widely deployed in the ISP (Internet Service Provider) market, reducing both acquisition and overall operational costs (CAPEX and OPEX)
From rooms to full hotel integration
In the hospitality sector, the massive adoption of POL in IT infrastructures was introduced by SAMPOL, first in rooms and later across all common areas.
- ROOM POL
The similarity between the essential services in hotel rooms – TV, telephone and data (LAN and WiFi) – and those in the home market triggered the widespread adoption of POL in guest rooms. An ISP terminal device called an ONT (Optical Node Terminal) delivers these services directly through its standard configuration: telephony, data and television.
- COMMON AREA POL
Hotel and resort networks are essentially variations of enterprise LAN/MAN networks (universities, industrial facilities, office buildings, etc.). At SAMPOL, we implement these networks as pure passive optical networks.
