In November 2022, RCD Hotels, a leading international hospitality group, launched construction on a major investment project in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The project will mark the first UNICO hotel on the island. The new development will be named UNICO 18 77 Hotel Montego Bay.
This project is expected to add 451+80 rooms and employee housing complexes to Jamaica’s tourism offerings. Commenting on the project, RCD Hotels stated, “We are excited to introduce a brand like UNICO in Jamaica and look forward to showcasing the island’s rich culture through the UNICO experience. No detail has been spared – this property will highlight local culture, art, cuisine and mixology through unique experiences both on and off-site.”
The project will feature a hybrid trigeneration plant with a total power output of 3,000 kWe, powered by two Jembacher JMS 420 natural gas engines and a 1,200 kWp photovoltaic plant installed on the industrial building’s rooftop. Beyond electricity, the plant will supply the hotel with: cooling, heating, natural gas and drinking water produced via a reverse osmosis plant.
All these facilities will be built, operated and maintained by SAMPOL, leveraging our extensive experience in the sector.
This new hybrid plant has been designed with a focus on maximum efficiency, sustainability and supply security for the hotel. The selection and design of all generation equipment were carried out with environmental goals and resilience in mind, regardless of the conditions.
By opting for the most efficient solution, the plant will achieve an annual reduction of 4,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions, compared to conventional generation systems.
SAMPOL’s plant will fully cover the hotel’s energy demands, integrating the latest and most efficient technologies in the sector, sourced from top-tier suppliers.
The natural gas plant will supply fuel to both SAMPOL’s facilities and the entire hotel complex. Additionally, the hotel’s laundries and kitchens will receive natural gas supplied by SAMPOL, unifying the fuel system throughout the resort. In this way, we prioritise a cleaner alternative to conventional fuels.
The project will follow a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model spanning 12 years, under which SAMPOL will provide electricity, drinking water, natural gas, cooling and heating. This agreement will result in 54,000 tonnes of CO2 savings over the contract’s 12-year duration.
