In Mexico, Sigma Alimentos has entrusted SAMPOL’s Energy division with a new project. This new contract involves the refurbishment of an island-mode cogeneration plant.

The new design proposed by SAMPOL will achieve highly efficient fuel use, a reduced carbon footprint and economic savings for Sigma.

As part of this project, we will install three new natural gas-powered generator sets, a new waste heat recovery boiler for steam production and new plate heat exchangers to harness the hot water from the engines. With the new Rolls-Royce MTU engines, we will achieve:

  • Operational reliability
  • High efficiency in electricity generation
  • Thermal utilisation of exhaust gases and hot water from engine circuits

Additionally, the plant’s design allows for a future second phase in which natural gas will be hybridised with biogas from a planned waste biodigester. This will significantly enhance carbon footprint reduction and cost savings for Sigma.

Sigma Alimentos is a global company operating in 18 countries, dedicated to providing high-quality food products. With this new project in Mexico, Sigma once again places its trust in SAMPOL, as it marks the third cogeneration facility we have built for them, joining the existing installations at Campofrío in Burgos, Spain, and Fiorucci in Santa Palomba, Italy. We will continue collaborating on Sigma’s decarbonisation plans for its production processes.
