With nearly 30 years of service, RECO prioritises safe and reliable energy solutions to meet the demands of Roatán’s thriving tourism industry.

Currently, RECO operates a hybrid energy mix, combining renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and existing propane engines. The company chose to expand its operations with Bergen Engines due to their proven efficiency, superior performance with propane gas and reliability under variable conditions.

“This investment supports the economic growth and development of Roatán, Islas de la Bahía, by providing clean, green energy through an LPG power plant, aligning with energy transition goals to protect the environment. Most Caribbean islands rely on diesel power plants, and our vision to lead the market with this type of technology positions us as an innovative, pioneering company and a model for the regional power industry,” explains Ramiro Tumbaco, General Manager of RECO.

The core of this innovative project will be three Bergen Engines B36:45V20 generators operating on a baseload capacity. Fuelled by propane, these engines deliver industry-leading power output, with a minimal power reduction of just 25% compared to natural gas, thanks to their advanced design. Developed in close collaboration with customers and service organisations, the Bergen B36:45 engine sets a new benchmark for efficiency and reliability in power generation. It delivers up to 600 kW per cylinder with natural gas and an impressive 450 kW per cylinder with propane, optimising lifecycle costs while complying with strict emissions regulations.

With a 30-year presence in LATAM and the Caribbean, SAMPOL will oversee the design, engineering and construction of the power plant, ensuring that it meets RECO’s specific requirements and customised specifications. SAMPOL has focused on maximising energy efficiency, availability and reliability.

As Josu Vicandi, Director of Business Development at SAMPOL, explains, “We are delighted to join forces with Bergen Engines once again to deliver efficient power generation to RECO and Roatán. Understanding and addressing RECO’s unique specifications has been a key part of our project design discussions.”

“Roatán is experiencing rapid growth, largely driven by the tourism industry. It is a pleasure to support RECO with reliable and efficient baseload power to meet demand and sustain their growth strategy,” said Theodore Lorentzos, Head of Sales – Americas, Bergen Engines.

This landmark project marks another significant step in SAMPOL’s continued expansion in Latin America, adding to its global portfolio of projects across 22 countries and four continents over its 90-year history.

SAMPOL has formed a strategic alliance with Bergen Engines, a leading manufacturer of medium-speed engines and power generation systems, to supply a new 25 MW power plant for the island of Roatán, Honduras.
